Google will soon release a major update for the Wear OS platform that brings custom tiles to the smartwatches. The news came from official Google’s Android Developers Blog and confirmed this major firmware for the wearables. Tiles are the widgets of the platform that adds many features to one screen to make it easy to access. Until now, Google hadn’t been given permission to third-party developers to create tiles for the Wear OS smartwatches.
At the glance, users can add heart rate, SpO2, blood pressure, workout modes or exercises mode, weather forecast, health stats, and many more functions. Wear OS is far behind in this feature. Samsung is a perfect example of it and how it has introduced widgets for the Galaxy Watch lineup. Other companies in this area are also catching up, and Google will start it this spring. Google says, it will start rolling out necessary firmware, and then it will open the door for other developers.
The Jetpack Tiles Library is in alpha mode and it is enough for developers to create custom tiles for Wear OS. When the Wear OS update starts, the latest smartwatches like Fossil Gen 5, Oppo Watch, Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3, and other watches will receive it. The rollout will start in April, so you can check later about the new version.
