As we know, Apple is going to make massive changes to the next Apple Watch series. The next watches will get new features along with the other essential hardware changes. Now, as per the latest report from MacWorld, the company is planning to introduce Touch ID authentication on the Apple Watch 2026 model. The folks at MacWorld claim to have found internal source code that mentions the unique feature. It will allow users to not rely only on PIN but also use their finger to unlock the smartwatch.
The code, which is explicitly for internal use for now, references AppleMesa, Apple’s internal codename for Touch ID. This discovery points directly to the 2026 Apple Watch lineup, though it’s important to note that the feature is still in the prototype stage. None of the current Apple Watch models, including those set to launch in 2025, contains Touch ID drivers.

If Apple succeeds in integrating Touch ID, it would be a major breakthrough in Apple Watch security and convenience. Currently, users rely on passcodes or automatic unlock via iPhone. A fingerprint sensor could allow faster authentication for unlocking the watch, authorizing Apple Pay, and accessing sensitive health data — all directly from the wrist.

Industry analysts speculate that Apple might embed the Touch ID sensor into the side button or the digital crown, preserving the watch’s compact design while improving security. However, challenges such as sensor size, durability, and maintaining water resistance have likely delayed its rollout in earlier models.
Of course, Apple could still abandon the feature before launch, as internal testing doesn’t always guarantee production. But with AppleMesa now tied to future models, Touch ID on the Apple Watch looks closer than ever to becoming a reality.
