Privacy in public spaces has long been a challenge for smartphone users. While many rely on third-party privacy screen protectors to shield sensitive content from prying eyes, Samsung appears to be working on a built-in solution that eliminates the need for extra accessories. Discovered within the code of One UI 8.5, the feature, aptly named Privacy Display, promises to limit screen visibility from side angles. This means that users will still see their content clearly when looking straight at the display, but people seated or standing nearby won’t be able to peek over their shoulders.
According to screenshots shared by X user, Samsung is planning to make the Privacy Display highly customizable. Users will find an Auto Privacy toggle in the settings, which can automatically activate the feature in crowded public areas such as elevators, buses, or trains. There will also be scheduling options, allowing the feature to turn on or off at specific times of day.
More interestingly, Samsung seems to be extending privacy controls beyond the entire display. The system may allow partial obscuring, for example, hiding notifications, picture-in-picture videos, or even sensitive images in the gallery that are tagged as protected. It also appears that security interfaces such as PIN, password, or pattern entry screens can benefit from extra protection.
For those who want maximum discretion, there’s an optional “Maximum Privacy” mode, which reduces screen brightness to make side-viewing nearly impossible. However, there’s a catch: this functionality will require dedicated hardware support. According to leaks, it will debut exclusively on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, making it unlikely to appear on older models despite software updates. If true, this could be one of Samsung’s most practical innovations yet for users concerned with on-the-go privacy.
