Samsung Shifts Foldable Strategy, Prioritizes Galaxy Z Fold Over Flip in 2026

February 3, 2026

This year, Galaxy Z Fold 7 & Flip 7 have become massive successes in major markets, especially the Fold one. With its overall changes and offering, made it the number one Foldable device in the market. Now, Samsung is planning to produce more Galaxy Fold models than Flip models for the first time since both form factors debuted in 2021. This change highlights a growing confidence in book-style foldables and reflects evolving consumer preferences toward larger screens.

According to sources, the company is preparing to manufacture around 3.5 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is expected to launch in the second half of the year.

In comparison, production of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is estimated at between 2.5 and 3 million units. An industry insider noted that this is the first time the Fold has surpassed the Flip in annual production plans from the initial planning stage. The decision is largely influenced by the stronger-than-expected performance of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year. While earlier plans traditionally favored the Flip, actual shipments showed that the Fold 7 outsold expectations and even exceeded shipments of the Galaxy Z Flip 7.

Industry estimates suggest that combined shipments of the Fold 7 and Flip 7 surpassed 6 million units in total. Historically, the Flip series dominated sales due to its lower price, lighter weight, and compact design. Before 2024, the Flip often accounted for 60 to 70 percent of foldable shipments.

However, the Fold 7 marked a turning point by addressing long-standing drawbacks. It launched at just 215 grams, lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and featured an ultra-thin 8.9mm folded profile. Looking ahead, it plans to further enhance the Fold lineup by reducing thickness and weight even more, potentially removing the digitizer while improving display-crease visibility.

This strategy also aligns with broader market trends, as book-type foldables gain popularity globally, and don’t forget the Apple Fold competition ahead. Even Apple is expected to enter the segment later this year, signaling increased competition and growing demand for larger foldable devices.
