One UI 2.5 Leak Suggest Ads Are Coming on Samsung Phones

June 8, 2020

Samsung users have long appreciated the company’s clean and user-friendly One UI experience, but a new leak hints at a change that might not sit well with fans. According to recent reports, the upcoming One UI 2.5 update could introduce ads on the lock screen, a move that mirrors the strategy used by several Chinese smartphone manufacturers.

The One UI 2.5 version is expected to debut with the Galaxy Note 20 series and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 launch in August, followed by a rollout to popular devices such as the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy Note 10. Samsung’s mid-range models, including the Galaxy A and Galaxy M series, are also likely to receive the update.

The leak suggests that Samsung may be experimenting with integrating promotional content or sponsored visuals directly onto the lock screen interface. While this might help the company generate additional revenue, it risks frustrating users who have come to expect a premium, ad-free experience on their flagship devices.

However, it’s important to note that these lock screen ads may only appear in select markets, particularly in parts of Asia where Samsung often experiments with localized features. Global flagship models are unlikely to display such ads, especially in premium markets like the U.S. and Europe.

If true, this move could mark a significant shift in Samsung’s software strategy, potentially blending affordability with advertising-based monetization. While the company hasn’t officially confirmed these reports, the reaction from users is already mixed. Many hope Samsung keeps its flagship experience clean and ad-free.
