Apple has only just introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, but the company may already have bigger plans for the new name. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple could eventually turn the iPhone Duo into an entire product family with different models and screen sizes.
The choice of the Duo name may be an important part of Apple’s long-term strategy. Before its launch, the foldable iPhone was widely rumored to be called the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold. Apple ultimately chose Duo, which gives the company more flexibility to add different versions in the future.
iPhone Duo Max Could Be Next
One possibility is an iPhone Duo Max with a larger display. The idea would be similar to Apple’s existing Pro Max models, giving customers a bigger foldable iPhone with potentially more screen space for watching videos, gaming, and multitasking.
Apple already promotes the current iPhone Duo as a device designed for multitasking. When opened, it offers the largest iPhone display yet, along with features such as side-by-side apps and flexible viewing modes.
Gurman also suggests that Apple could explore a smaller iPhone Duo Mini. This could potentially use a clamshell-style design, allowing the phone to fold into a smaller size. Another possibility is an iPhone Duo SE, which could bring the foldable design to a lower price point. However, these models are only part of Apple’s reported roadmap and should not be treated as confirmed products yet.
The naming strategy makes sense if Apple wants foldable iPhones to become a major product category. Names such as Duo Max, Duo Mini and Duo SE would fit more naturally into Apple’s existing product lineup than names built around “Ultra.” For now, the iPhone Duo is Apple’s first step into the foldable smartphone market. The device starts at $1,999 in the US and is positioned as a premium flagship.
If the reported plans become reality, however, the iPhone Duo could eventually become much more than a single foldable iPhone. It could develop into a complete family of foldable devices designed for different users and budgets.
